A classic alien face. The oval, bare head of a gray or green alien with large black eyes and a slight, friendly smile.&nbsp;Samsung depicts nostrils, Facebook a nose.

May represent extraterrestrial life or topics concerning outer space, but commonly conveys a playful sense of weirdness&nbsp;or strangeness, as if someone or something is&nbsp;out&nbsp;there or&nbsp;from another planet.

Apple previously displayed&nbsp;a similar looking&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.getemoji.com/post/116839074745/what-does-the-alien-emoji-mean-on-ios-its-an">alien head in a box</a> as a placeholder for an unknown emoji, but now shows a boxed question mark.

Extraterrestrial Alien

A grotesque, red face with horns, wide eyes, a large nose, crooked fangs, and a fringe of shaggy hair. Depicts an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oni">oni</a>, a kind of hideous ogre in Japanese folklore.

On <a href="/new-years-eve/">New Year&rsquo;s Eve</a> in some parts of Japan, men may wear&nbsp;oni masks and straw coats to dress up as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namahage">namahage</a>, another mythic being,&nbsp;to chide naughty children or ward off evil. May popularly denote supernatural or figurative beasts and demons.

Japanese Ogre

The head of a&nbsp;classic robot. Commonly depicted as a vintage, tin&nbsp;toy robot with circular eyes, a triangular nose, knobs for&nbsp;ears, a light and/or antennae atop its head, and a grill-like mouth similar to a <a href="/grimacing-face/">grimace</a>. Colors vary across platform, but its head is metallic on most platforms.&nbsp;

May be used of topics concerning robotics, electronics, computer programming, futurism, and science fiction. It also enjoys a range of idiosyncratic applications, such as conveying a sense of weirdness and fun as well as alarm, surprise, and excitement, given its wide-eyed, teeth-gritting expression.

Robot Face

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joystick">joystick</a>, as used in playing classic arcade, computer, or video games. Generally depicted with a black base, red-knobbed control stick, and one or more red buttons.

Commonly used for content concerning various types of gaming; occasionaly applied to aviation and aircraft.

Google&#39;s base was <a href="/google/android-8.0/joystick/">previously</a>&nbsp;blue, and&nbsp;Microsoft <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/joystick/">previously featured</a> a more modern design.

Joystick

A video game emoji,&nbsp;shown on major platforms as a console&nbsp;gamepad with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-pad">D-pad</a>, <a href="/joystick/" title="🕹 Joystick">joysticks</a>, and buttons.

Video Game

A flying saucer, sometimes referred to as an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO). Previously shown on some platforms with an <a href="/alien/" title="👽 Alien">alien</a> at the controls and/or a beam of light emitting from the base.

Flying Saucer

A face, usually purple, with devil horns, a wide grin, and eyes and eyebrows scrunched downward in the same manner as <a href="/angry-face/">😠&nbsp;Angry Face</a> on most platforms. Google&rsquo;s design is red and Facebook&rsquo;s has black horns and green eyes.

Commonly used to convey mischief, naughtiness, and excitement or excellence (slang,&nbsp;bad&nbsp;or&nbsp;wicked). May also represent devils or devilish behavior, especially around <a href="/halloween/">Halloween</a>. More playful and suggestive than its impish counterpart, <a href="/angry-face-with-horns/">👿&nbsp;Angry Face With Horns</a>.

<a href="/google/android-7.0/smiling-face-with-horns/">Google</a> and <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/smiling-face-with-horns/">Samsung</a> previously depicted orangish-red characters, with Google once featuring <a href="/google/android-4.4/smiling-face-with-horns/">a frown</a> and Samsung <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/smiling-face-with-horns/">a sharp snaggletooth</a>.

Smiling Face with Horns

A menacing, red mask featuring a grotesquely long nose, angry eyes, and bushy eyebrows and mustache. Depicts a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tengu">tengu</a>, a proud trickster figure in Japanese folklore.

May popularly denote evil, anger, cruel or mischievous behavior, and sexual suggestion, due to the phallic appearance of its nose. May also represent supernatural or figurative trolls, goblins, and other such beings.

Japanese Goblin

Boo! A white, cartoon ghost making a silly face. Its tongue is stuck out and arms are outstretched, as if trying to scare someone in a friendly way. Several platforms feature one larger, bulging eye, while others show the ghost winking.

Resembles a classic ghost costume for <a href="/halloween/">Halloween</a>. May also be used to convey something or someone is fun or goofy. Thanks to its raised arms, some use this&nbsp;emoji as a way of expressing an excited&nbsp;Yay!

May also be used to refer to the slang term &quot;ghosting&quot;, where a&nbsp;personal relationship is ended&nbsp;suddenly without explanation by one person withdrawing from all communication with another.

Samsung&#39;s design <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.0/ghost/">previously depicted</a> this as a smiley in a ghost costume.

Ghost

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet">comet</a>, an icy, rocky space object that can form a tail of gas and dust when near the sun. Generally depicted as an icy-blue comet, as if streaking downwards in a night sky.

May be used for meteors and other celestial bodies, as well as for content concerning space more generally. Also occasionally used for flair or flourish.

Not to be confused with <a href="/shooting-star/">🌠 Shooting Star</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Samsung&rsquo;s comet is fiery-red, as is Apple&rsquo;s, which appears to be ascending. WhatsApp&rsquo;s comet is depicted in a starry, night sky, Apple&rsquo;s comet was <a href="/apple/ios-9.1/comet/">previously</a> descending and blue.

Comet

A yellow face smiling with <a href="/open-hands/">open hands</a>, as if giving a hug.&nbsp;May be used to offer thanks and support, show love and care, or express warm, positive feelings more generally.

Due to its hand gesture, often used to represent jazz hands, indicating such feelings as excitement, enthusiasm, or a sense of flourish or accomplishment.

Joins <a href="/thinking-face/">🤔&nbsp;Thinking Face</a>, <a href="/shushing-face/">🤫&nbsp;Shushing Face</a>, and <a href="/face-with-hand-over-mouth/">🤭&nbsp;Face With Hand Over Mouth</a> as one of the few smileys featuring hands. Hugging Face

A squirt gun (water pistol), as used to <a href="/sweat-droplets/">spray water</a> for fun.

On major platforms, depicted as a green or orange toy gun with an orange tip and barrel pointed left.&nbsp;Google&nbsp;and Facebook&rsquo;s designs include mounted reservoirs.

Originally depicted as a classic handgun, as a revolver or other pistol. In 2016, <a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/apple-and-the-gun-emoji/">Apple switched its design</a> from weapon&nbsp;to toy; other major vendors followed suit by 2018. Deprecated emoji sets or smaller platforms still display the emoji as a handgun.

Microsoft <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/pistol/">initially displayed</a> the emoji as a toy ray gun before switching to a revolver, then squirt gun. Google <a href="/google/android-4.4/pistol/">once featured</a> a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blunderbuss">blunderbuss</a>.

Milky Way

A rocket being propelled into <a href="/milky-way/" title="🌌 Milky Way">space</a>. Sometimes used to indicate a fast increase, for instance when referring to stocks going&nbsp;to the moon&nbsp;🚀 (rising quickly in price).

A desktop personal computer. Generally depicted as a black or gray monitor with a dark or blue screen.

Like <a href="/laptop/">💻 Laptop Computer</a>, used for various content concerning computer technology, work, and activity. May also be used to represent <a href="/laptop/">television</a>, as it resembles a flatscreen TV.

Google and WhatsApp include <a href="/keyboard/">keyboards</a>. Apple&rsquo;s design resembles an iMac. <a href="/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/desktop-computer/">Microsoft</a> and <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/desktop-computer/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> designs previously featured PC towers.

Desktop Computer

A swirl of brown poop,&nbsp;shaped like&nbsp;<a href="/soft-ice-cream/">soft-serve ice cream</a> with large, excited eyes and frequently a big, friendly <a href="/grinning-face-with-big-eyes/">smile</a>.

Widely agreed to have been inspired by the various poop-shaped characters within the Dr. Slump manga series by Akira Toriyama.

May be used to represent feces and other bathroom topics as well as stand in for their many&nbsp;related slang terms. It also enjoys a wide range of idiosyncratic applications, such as conveying a sense of whimsy or silliness, given its fun, happy expression.

<a href="/microsoft/windows-10/pile-of-poo/">Microsoft</a> and Google previously depicted a literal pile of feces, <a href="/google/android-5.0/pile-of-poo/">Google&rsquo;s design</a> featuring stink lines and flies hovering above it.

Commonly used for various content concerning astronomy, outer space, celestial objects, and science more generally. May also be used for various concepts of sight (e.g., spying, viewing).

Twitter&rsquo;s designs feature red hardware, as did as an older <a href="/google/android-8.0/telescope/">Google</a>&nbsp;design.

Telescope

A dish antenna, as used to send or receive information to or from a communication <a href="/satellite/">satellite</a>&mdash;or <a href="/alien/">👽 Extraterrestrial Life</a>. Generally depicted as a mounted, metal dish with its antenna positioned at 45&deg; to the upper right.

Commonly used to represent satellite <a href="/television/">television</a>, <a href="/radio/">radio</a>, and internet, as well as broadcasting, streaming, cellular, and wireless services or technologies. May also represent various concepts of signals and transmission.

Several platforms, including Microsoft and Twitter, feature curved, radiating lines, as if transmitting data.

Satellite Antenna

A squid, an octopus-like sea animal with ten arms. Generally depicted as a pinkish-orange <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_squid">giant squid</a>, facing forward or angled to the left, with a slender, arrow-like body, small eyes, and two, long arms raised up at its sides. Platforms generally depict six arms.

Occasionally used to represent squid as a food item. Not to be confused with <a href="/octopus/">🐙 Octopus</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Microsoft, WhatsApp&nbsp;and Twitter&rsquo;s squid designs&nbsp;are facing forward, as was a previous <a href="/google/android-8.0/squid/">Google</a>&nbsp;design. Samsung&rsquo;s squid was <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/squid/">previously</a> gray.

Squid

An octopus, a sea animal with eight legs, known to change color and release&nbsp;ink. Generally depicted as a pink or orange octopus facing forward, with a large, round head, prominent eyes, and its tentacle-like arms raised at its sides. Platforms vary in the number of arms shown, ranging from four to the full eight, with several designs featuring suckers on them.

Not to be confused with <a href="/squid/">🦑 Squid</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Twitter&rsquo;s octopus is purple. Apple&rsquo;s has a friendly, cartoon-styled appearance. <a href="/google/android-7.0/octopus/">Google</a> and <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/octopus/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> octopuses previously looked surprised, while <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/octopus/">Microsoft&#39;s</a>&nbsp;suggested an <a href="/alien-monster/">👾 Alien Monster</a>.
