A squid, an octopus-like sea animal with ten arms. Squid

An octopus, a sea animal with eight legs, known to change color and release&nbsp;ink. Generally depicted as a pink or orange octopus facing forward, with a large, round head, prominent eyes, and its tentacle-like arms raised at its sides. Platforms vary in the number of arms shown, ranging from four to the full eight, with several designs featuring suckers on them.

Not to be confused with <a href="/squid/">🦑 Squid</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Twitter&rsquo;s octopus is purple. Apple&rsquo;s has a friendly, cartoon-styled appearance. <a href="/google/android-7.0/octopus/">Google</a> and <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/octopus/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> octopuses previously looked surprised, while <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/octopus/">Microsoft&#39;s</a>&nbsp;suggested an <a href="/alien-monster/">👾 Alien Monster</a>.

Octopus

A lobster, a large crustacean with a prominent tail and pincers. Depicted as a reddish-orange lobster (as cooked) from above, with a long body and tail, short, tentacle-like eyes, and ten legs, the top of which are very large pincers.

Often used to represent lobster as food as well as in connection to the US state of Maine.

In its release year of 2018, Emojipedia&rsquo;s original sample image was criticized as anatomically incorrect but was shortly after <a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/skateboard-dna-and-lobster-updated/">resolved</a>. That year, the transgender community <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/trans-activists-lobster-emoji-flag-charlie-craggs-unicode-nail-it-a8474476.html">embraced</a> the lobster as a symbol for their efforts for <a href="/transgender-flag/">Transgender Flag</a>&nbsp;emoji.

Samsung, WhatsApp, and Facebook&rsquo;s lobsters are depicted at an angle.

Lobster

A snail, a slow-moving, snail-like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mollusca">mollusk</a> in a spiraling <a href="/spiral-shell/">shell</a>. Generally depicted as a brown snail in full profile facing left or right, with a brown, textured shell and tentacle-like eyes.

May be used to represent a slug and&nbsp;various senses of slow.

Twitter&rsquo;s snail has a purple body and yellow shell. Microsoft&rsquo;s snail <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/snail/">previously</a> had a green body.

Snail

A whale, the massive marine mammal. Generally depicted as a light-blue whale in full profile facing left, with its tail curving down towards is huge mouth. Shown with a white, textured underside, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humpback_whale">humpback</a> or&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_whale">blue whale</a>.

Not to be confused with the more cartoon-styled <a href="/spouting-whale/">🐳 Spouting Whale</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Apple and Google&#39;s whales have slightly open mouths, revealing <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baleen">baleen</a>.

Whale

A shark, a large, stealthy fish with many teeth. Generally depicted as a gray shark in full profile facing left, as a&nbsp;<a href="/dolphin/">tiger</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_shark">bull</a>, or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_white_shark">great white shark</a> hunting in the water. Shown with a white underside and three gills, its pointed nose and teeth-lined mouth curving down to a sharp dorsal fin and long, pointed tail.

Not to be confused with <a href="/dolphin/">🐬 Dolphin</a>.

Shark

A common fish, as swims in the water. Depicted as a generic, light-blue fish, often with a white underside, in full profile facing left, with fins and prominent gill cover.

May be used to represent a variety of other fish (freshwater or saltwater), <a href="/fishing-pole/">fishing</a>, metaphorical senses of fish, and fish as food, as consumed in the form of <a href="/sushi/">🍣 Sushi</a>. May be used to represent <a href="/pisces/">♓ Pisces</a>, the Fish, in the Western zodiac.

Not to be confused with <a href="/tropical-fish/">🐠 Tropical Fish</a> or <a href="/blowfish/">🐡 Blowfish</a>, though their applications may overlap. Vendors implement a similar design to the fish caught on the <a href="/fishing-pole/">🎣 Fishing Pole</a>.

Fish

A tropical fish, as swims in the warm waters of a coral reef or is kept as a pet in an aquarium. Depicted as a brightly colored fish in full profile facing left, with slender fins. Often shown as a blue-and-yellow fish with stripes, as an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pterophyllum">angelfish</a>.

<a href="/google/android-7.0/tropical-fish/">Google</a> and <a href="/facebook/1.0/tropical-fish/">Facebook&rsquo;s</a> fish previously resembled a goldfish, while&nbsp;<a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/tropical-fish/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a>&nbsp;was black and white.&nbsp;Microsoft&rsquo;s fish was previously&nbsp;<a href="/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/tropical-fish/">orange with white stripes</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="/microsoft/windows-10/tropical-fish/">yellow and blue</a> before that.

Tropical Fish

A blowfish (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraodontidae">puffer</a>), which puffs up and becomes spiky when alarmed. Depicted as an orange or brown blowfish in full profile facing left, with small fins, a white underside, and a round, spiky body, as if inflated.

Called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugu">fugu</a> in Japan, where it&rsquo;s consumed as a delicacy.

Crab

A shrimp (prawn), a small crustacean with a long tail. Generally depicted as a reddish-orange shrimp (as cooked) in full profile facing left, with tiny eyes, many limbs, and its long antennae curling back as its long tail curls in.

May be consumed in the form of <a href="/fried-shrimp/">🍤 Fried Shrimp</a> or <a href="/shallow-pan-of-food/">🥘 Shallow Pan of Food</a>. Often used to represent seafood.

Shrimp

A friendly-looking, tentacled space creature with two eyes. Most major platforms style their design after aliens in classic arcade games like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Invaders">Space Invaders</a>, rendering it purple and pixellated, as if in 8-bit graphics.

Samsung&rsquo;s design resembles an <a href="/octopus/">octopus</a> and <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/alien-monster/">previously featured</a> a big-brained <a href="/alien/">alien</a>, &agrave; la <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cage_(Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series)">Star Trek</a>. Earlier designs from <a href="/google/android-7.0/alien-monster/">Google</a> and <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/alien-monster/">Microsoft</a> depicted more cartoon-like alien monsters.

May be used of topics concerning extraterrestrial life,&nbsp;outer space, gaming, and computing, but also enjoys a range of idiosyncratic applications, such as&nbsp;conveying a&nbsp;sense of weirdness, wackiness, or excitement, given that the emoji looks like it is raising its arms shouting&nbsp;Yay! on many platforms.

Alien Monster

A spider, an eight-legged <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachnid">arachnid</a> that spins a web. Depicted as a common black spider, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_house_spider">house&nbsp;spider</a>&nbsp;or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_funnel-web_spider">funnel-web spider</a>, often shown from above with its large abdomen oriented at the bottom.

Facebook&rsquo;s spider is facing left. Google&#39;s spider <a href="/google/android-8.0/spider/">was previously</a> upside down, suspended from a thread, though now is&nbsp;facing&nbsp;left.&nbsp;<a href="/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/spider/">Microsoft&rsquo;s</a> spider was previously a black widow, while&nbsp;<a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/spider/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> was brown.

Spider

A flat, shallow, black pan with side handles, containing saffron-colored&nbsp;<a href="/cooked-rice/">rice</a>, vegetables, a leg of&nbsp;<a href="/poultry-leg/">poultry</a>, and/or&nbsp;<a href="/fried-shrimp/">shrimp&nbsp;</a>and&nbsp;<a href="/cooking/">lemon&nbsp;</a>slices. Commonly associated with&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paella">paella</a>, a traditional dish from&nbsp;<a href="/flag-spain/" title="🇪🇸 Flag for Spain">Spain</a>. May be used for eating,&nbsp;<a href="/cooking/">cooking</a>, dining, and meals more generally.

Apple&#39;s version of this emoji is considered to be <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/apple-fixes-paella-emoji/">representative</a> of the traditional ingredients&nbsp;from Valencia. Samsung <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/shallow-pan-of-food/">previously displayed</a> this emoji as a Korean hot pot.

Shallow Pan of Food

A scorpion, an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachnid">arachnid</a> with <a href="/lobster/">lobster</a>-like pincers and a stinging tail. Depicted as a light-brown scorpion from above, often facing left, with its pincers and curving stinger raised. Shown with six or, accurately, eight legs in addition to its pincers.

Often used to represent <a href="/scorpio/">♏ Scorpio</a> in the Western zodiac.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s scorpion is reddish in color.
